Brooks Hyperion Tempo: A Modern Classic
By Senior Contributor Andrea Myers

The Brooks Hyperion Tempo was released in 2020 as a training companion to the plated Hyperion Elite. It features a DNA Flash midsole, which is a nitrogen-infused EVA that continues to be used in the Hyperion Elite line. Three years after its release, it is somewhat of a rarity in the performance trainer category, which has become dominated by high stack, heavily rockered, plated shoes. The Hyperion Tempo feels like a modern update on a classic road flat or performance trainer from pre-Vaporfly days.

Brooks Revel 6: Training at a Low Price Point
By Content Manager Bach Pham

Running often is described as relatively budget sporting activity. These days, however, with skyrocketing prices for everything from daily trainers to racing shoes, that has become less and less of a truth. The Brooks Revel series has amazingly remained a consistently priced, affordable option that performs above average for its cost. The Revel 6 continues the tradition by doubling down on fit through a new upper and adding a touch more cushion in the heel, helping runners feel comfortable both above and underfoot without hurting the bank.

La Sportiva Cyklon Cross GTX Review: Conquer the Winter
By Ryan Flugaur

Winter running in Wisconsin can be a challenging time to keep up with the sport. Many of my run club friends choose to leave the dark and cold outside world and head indoors to their warm, climate-controlled gyms with treadmills. I continue to run outside during these extreme conditions, so having the correct equipment is key to staying warm and upright. With new clothing and material advancements I have managed to find a trusty wardrobe to keep warm in almost any temperature but where I often struggle is in my search for footwear. When the roads become snow covered and icy, I typically gravitate from my road running shoes to heavier trail shoes with improved grip and possibly a Gore-tex upper to keep my feet dry. The Cyklon Cross GTX takes it up a notch from my trail shoes and is unlike any other winter running shoe I have tried before.

ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 Review: Big Changes (For the Better??)
By Chief Editor Matt Klein, Senior Contributors Nathan Brown & David Salas

If you've been following ASICS (and other companies like Brooks) closely, you'll notice that certain shoes don't get major overhauls very often. In part, that is due to shoes like the Nimbus or the Ghost having a faithful following, and if you change it too much you might lose some unhappy customers. What companies do instead is start to introduce other lines of shoes. Since those are more exploratory and don't have a huge following, it gives the brand liberties to experiment and play around a bit more with shaping, uppers, cushioning, etc. without the risk of losing people on the journey.

With the ability to play around with a model while branding it close to another model (that needs some real updates), it might get some of the faithful "old style" crew to jump over to the "new age" shoes. When the time is right and the kinks are worked out, all the new experiments in these new lines of shoes can be infused in the main line model, leading to a major update that is typically executed so well that you don't lose the faithful following. That's basically what has happened with the Nimbus 25. ASICS has been experimenting with the Nimbus Lite series for a few years, and now you are see the cushioning, fit, and most importantly geometry of that project hitting the mainstream with their signature series.

ASICS GT-1000 11 Review: Affordable Mild Stability
By Matthew Klein

While many running shoes have continued to jump in price, there are several standbys that have continued to maintain decent, affordable prices. The ASICS GT-1000 11 is one of the more, if not most, affordable stability shoe(s) on the market. It can easily able to be found for less than $100 (I found it for $64.99 on Amazon), making it an excellent shoe for those on a budget who still want medial stability. While the shoe has traditional methods of stability, it also continues to add some new-age ones (sidewalls, full ground contact outsole, etc). This is a great example of ASICS accepting and integrating new ideas into their footwear even down to the affordable options.

Brooks Hyperion Max Review: A Conundrum
By David Salas, Andrea Myers and Matthew Klein

As shoes get more complicated foams and increasingly stiffer plates, finding simple, lightweight and faster shoes has become increasingly difficult. The Hyperion Tempo is one of the few that has fit into this category, but does little for those who want a little more shoe that can still move fast. Enter the Brooks Hyperion Max. A slight name conundrum as it is not the most max stack height shoe out there, this shoe maintains a lighter weight while introducing a strong rocker and a little more stack height. The result is a simple fast roller for those who don't want the stiffness of a plate, but still want something fast and light that can handle almost any distance you throw at it.

Find the stability version of the Hyperion Tempo here.

ASICS Metaspeed LD Review: Flytefoam Turbo-Charged Track Spike
By Matthew Klein

As super stack shoes have clearly taken over the road racing scene, super spikes are just starting to take over the track. What started with the Nike Dragonfly (review) and Adidas Avanti TYO (review) now has a ton of other players either coming to or on the market. The ASICS Metaspeed LD is one of the first super spikes to combine both a carbon plate and a higher stack of super foam. Additionally, it is one of if not the lightest of this group thus far, although the measured weight for my size 10 is drastically different from the listed weight. Whether all that justifies the $250 price tag (making it the most expensive of this group as well) is something we have to discuss.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 19 Review
A very good redesign brings this stability trainer into the future.

Written by Chief Editor Matt Klein and Content Manager Bach Pham

The Wave Inspire is Mizuno's long-running line of stability trainer. In the past, the Inspire used a very unique wave plate design that extended into the medial (inner) side of the foot around the heel to help provide support. It acted as a wedge to help prevent the runner from collapsing in while also moving the runner forward. The Wave Inspire 19 reimagines the shaping of this design altogether and moves it forward into the future. The shoe remains unique in its field as one of the few moderately cushioned, high-drop stability trainers with medial support.

Brooks Divide 3: $100 Trail Shoe!
By Matthew Klein

Everything about footwear is increasing. Price, complexity, specificity, stack height, stiffness and so on. One of the more challenging endeavors for runners is to find something simple that can handle a little of everything at a solid price. This is especially important for new runners who are just getting into the sport and want to experience a variety of things without killing their bank accounts. While several road trail hybrids exist on the market, their prices are on the higher side. Enter the Brooks Divide 3, a simple, affordable, hybrid shoe that despite being an entry-level shoe, comes in with a surprising level of performance.
